We have recently run a couple of fantastic sessions at Annandale Grove , with previous participants of the Seniors and Teens Empathy Program catching up with some of the newer residents for an interactive education seminar on intergenerational connection.
Nathan took part in Virtual STEP in 2020 because family is such a big part of his life, and his own grandparents who are still alive are quite separate to his own family. He loved connecting with residents at the aged care over their common interests and passions. He particularly loved speaking with Louise over a mutual love of animals.
Incredible Artworks made with ❤️ and gifted by students from @youthoffthestreets to residents @bupaaustralia Maroubra at the end of last year after a year of face to face ( pre Covid) and virtual connection with residents.
As we say goodbye to 2020 it’s important to take the time to reflect on the challenges we have faced both personally and collectively. As an amazing guide since I spent time with her in 2018 , @laynebeachley reminds us “ here’s the thing about challenge - it’s a powerful teacher, it propels us to find solutions to problems we never would have considered if not for adversity. “
Having taken a wee break from social media, this Christmas message may be late, but is relevant for any day and an important reminder, especially now, to remember our most vulnerable Elder members of our community.
Garry loved hearing Fredi tell him of her summer plans to go to the beach in French 🇫🇷 and Chris talk about what was happening in Italian 🇮🇹 !
Thank you Ollie (6) and Jay (8) and mum Alana @alanaw81 for your amazing drawing and letter for Harry @bupaaustralia
“There is a charm to letters and cards that emails and smses can’t ever replicate, you cannot inhale them, drawing the fragrance of the place they have been mailed from, the feel of paper in your hand bearing the weight of the words contained within. You cannot rub your fingers over the paper and visualise the sender, seated at a table, writing, perhaps with a smile on their lips or a frown splitting the brow. You can’t see the pressure of the pen on the reverse of the page and imagine the mood the person might have been in when he or she was writing it. Smiley face icons cannot hope to replace words thought out carefully in order to put a smile on the other person’s face, the pressure of the pen, the sharpness or the laxity of the handwriting telling stories about the frame of mind of the writer, the smudges on the sheets of paper telling their own stories, blotches where tears might have fallen, hastily scratched out words where another would have been more appropriate, stories that the writer of the letter might not have intended to communicate. I have letters wrapped up in a soft muslin cloth, letters that are unsigned, tied up with a ribbon which I had once used to hold my soft, brown hair in place, and which had been gently untied by the writer of those letters. Occasionally, I unwrap them and breathe them in, knowing that the molecules from the hand that wrote them might still be scattered on the surface of the paper, a hand that is long dead.”
Watch out for a cheeky cockatoo named Coco if you plan to visit the zoo this summer !! With a love for animals that matches @sirdavidattenborough Louise was in heaven hearing Nate’s stories this year about volunteering at the zoo.
Flashback to last year, what feels like a mini lifetime ago after this strange year ... preparing a review of almost 3 years of STEP for students from @youthoffthestreets Bowen College - a time pre Covid 19, when face to face visits involved books, games, colouring, music & more.
How lucky were we last week to speak again with mentors from @raisefoundation and their 8 mentee students from Randwick Boys High School !
‘Always was. Always will be’
So great to be able to facilitate another virtual catch up session for students from The Bowen College and residents up at Bupa Maroubra.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who loves fully is prepared to die at any time”. Mark Twain
Yesterday’s sunrise to brighten this rainy weekend. Thanks @surfsupeasternsuburbs_ for capturing my boy and the morning’s beauty. So lucky to have someone like you committed to be out there every morning capturing such amazing moments.
Wonderful collaboration opportunity with @raisefoundation to have 12 of their mentors & 11 students from Chatswood High School ZOOM in for a virtual visit with residents @opalagedcare this week. 👩‍💻👨‍💻👏
Thank you Lucy (7 years) and Emily (9 years) and @megsybedford for sending more wonderful letters to Rita & Aurora at @bupaaustralia
Excited to be collaborating with program manager at @raisefoundation to bring students from Chatswood High school in to virtually visit the residents at @opalagedcare this week.
